Qualities: Protection, Self-Discipline
Maa Durga is worshipped all over India for her strength, protection and fearlessness. She carries weapons used to defeat evil (the illusion of separation) and liberate the oppressed.
Durga is believed to represent self-discipline, service, and mediation. She rides a lion (and is sometimes depicted riding a tiger) who is a symbol of strength and a leader, rather than a follower.
Buffalo Demon Story
It is on this lion that Durga ends the chaos created by the evil buffalo demon named Mahishasura. The buffalo demon was granted boons from Brahma that granted a wish that he could not be killed by man or gods. He took his powers to a new, seemingly unstoppable level by destroying everything in his path. Just then, a great feminine divine force, shakti showed up on the scene in the form of Durga, Mahadevi. She faced him straight on and with one swipe of her trident, sliced off his head, thus returning the world to a peaceful order. With the heavens and the world saved, the goddess promised to help the gods and the earth whenever she was needed.
“By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and equanimity toward the nonvirtuous, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness.” YS 1.33
How often do you fall for the illusion of separateness?
It is time to summon your own feminine energy, shakti.
Call on Durga, if you need a helping hand.
Affirmation: I slay the demons in my way.
